Shame on us! Shame on our society for even remotely harboring thoughts of resentfulness that the older population in America is in someway a liability! Shame on us for even uttering the words! These words whether they were written as a proposal or in spoken words that have given one of the greatest generations in our history a feeling of disposability. Shame on us! Shame on our society for causing these intellectual treasures any heartfelt anguish at a time in their lives when it is enough that they have to be struggling with their changing bodies, let alone their survival! What does it say about our current generation or what we are teaching future generations? This older generation is the generation that by the sweat of its brow and sacrifices brought up this country to be the great nation that we are now. It seems all too convenient that after reaping the fruits of their labor and collecting their hard earned wages in taxes to throw them aside as if they are useless. How selfish and narcissistic have we become that we place more value on the costs of a new wide screen “TV”, new cars and various plastic surgeries to enhance our appearances vs. how much money it might cost for Grandpa’s knee replacement?
Have we belittled and broken down the family unit so far that we can no longer see that it is our older population that represents one of the greatest resources we have? Have we created a culture in which we are defined by what we have materialistically rather than who we have as our family? A family that treasures the knowledge it may gain from those who have traveled these paths before us and cherishes each and every moment that you have together rather than some Madison Avenue/ Social Progressive created culture that now finds its oldest population a liability. Are we to throw out the old and replace it with some new populations that may enhance our consumer and voting base? How can we even consider throwing out our older population for a population that wasn’t even born here nor certainly haven’t been here long enough to have seriously contributed to this society? The President spoke of moral obligations today, I ask you what kind of morals would advocate taking from people their whole life, the very people whose hard earned money paid for all of the social programs we have today and then having little left for them? Certainly, what kind of a moral issue would state that if we are to provide for our brothers, are not the elderly our brothers? I suspect that there are not many in this country who couldn’t say that their parents gave them as much as they could while they were growing up. Are we now to turnabout and give them less? What will our legacy be? The circle of life is inevitable for we will all eventually become what we now find a burden. Are we all doomed to create what one might call the new inconvenient truth of our society?
